The word “millennial” has been been overused and misused to death at this point in pop culture. It’s hard to know what one really is.
Here’s the simple definition:
Millennials can generally be considered to be people who are under the age of 30 currently, or were born after the early 80s.
Some of you reading this may be millennials, in which case you might already know all this stuff. For the rest of you, I’m sure you’ve at least heard the term thrown around (probably incorrectly) and may be interested in knowing what makes them tick. Well the simple answer is this: The same things as you and I.
Millennials want a part of the American Dream just like everyone else, and studies are showing they’ll be a much more significant part of the buyer market in the coming year and foreseeable future.
1. They’re People. Not a Buzzword.
A twenty-something probably wouldn’t appreciate being called a “millennial” any more than my Grandma would like to be called part of the “Depression-era.” Like anyone, millennials want to feel like they each have their own identity.
Being prejudiced against young people (like a ton of the memes you see on Facebook) doesn’t help. Saying something like…
…would go over with a millennial about as well as a fart in church.
2. You Need to Be Mobile Friendly if You Expect to Get Their Business
The Millennial Generation has grown up with internet technology and for most of them it’s a very, very important part of their life. If you’re the type of person who still has a flip phone, it may be an uphill battle for you to get any millennial clients.
Most of you don’t have flip phones, of course, but if you do your first step is very simple:
However, having a smartphone isn’t really enough.
What does your website look like when someone using a phone goes to it? Is that going to be a user friendly experience for them? Is it going to help them give you the information you need to become their real estate agent?
In other words…
If you don’t have a site that’s mobile-friendly… You need to get one that is today.
Additionally, you need to be willing to e-mail, text, Facebook, Facetime, Skype, or whatever else it takes to get the job done. Most of you are probably already able to do these things with clients, but if not, now’s the time to start.
The younger generation isn’t interested in long phone calls or faxes, so don’t force those things upon them. Meet them where they’re at on a technological level.
3. They Are Probably More Ready to Buy Than Most Think
There’s the negative stereotype of the millennial.
Poor. Lazy. Self-entitled.
Funny. I know plenty of people over the age of 30 that fit that bill.
Just because a client is young it doesn't mean they aren't financially successful. Click To Tweet
There’s a lot of negative stereotypes surrounding the millennial generation. Things like:
“They’re slackers. They can’t even afford to buy a home.”
“They don’t care about anything. None of them even want to buy a home.”
“They have no real world experience. They don’t even know what goes in to buying a home!”
I have a one word response to all of those statements:
There are many, many, many financially successful millennials. They might not all be internet tycoons like Mark Zuckerberg, but they’re not all Hannah from “Girls,” either. Which brings me to my last point…
Hannah is actually Lena Dunham, creator of the HBO show “Girls,” a millennial who could probably buy about 5 houses right now.
